About Esther Lane

  • In the heart of Sydney’s Surry Hills, Esther Lane is a unique gathering space and home devoted to inquiry, creativity and collective sensemaking through a curated program of events, workshops, and film screenings.

For over a decade, we’ve hosted intimate receptions celebrating unconventional thinkers, creatives, and organisations of good humans.

Esther Lane is oriented by a simple belief that gathering is one of humanity’s most vital acts. By coming together with intention, we create space to expand our understanding, to nurture connection, and to cultivate the best of what it means to be human.

  • We acknowledge the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation, the traditional custodians of the land on which Esther Lane stands.

We pay respects to Gadigal Elders, past and present, as well as all First Nations people.

One of the last remaining original warehouses in the centre of Sydney, Esther Lane has had a rich cultural history throughout the 20th century.

At one point the first Akubra factory where slouch hats for WW1 were manufactured, the home of Edward Hill & Co Furniture designers and the space of cultural gatherings with bon vivant art dealer and wine connoisseur Rudy Komon and the late legendary art dealer Ray Hughes.

Esther Lane was most recently an artist’s studio for prominent Sydney painter Colin Lanceley OAM, before being shared with community as a gathering space under the care of Eleanor and Dan Gammell.

  • For over a decade, Esther Lane has hosted intimate receptions honouring global thought leaders and creatives, as well as organisations of good humans doing good work in the world:
